Nepal Bar Association (NBA) on Tuesday expressed "serious concern" over the recent "statement" of the Unity Group to start "physical attacks" on law professionals and justices including Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha and Justice Bal Ram K.C.
The Unity Group had issued a press statement on thursday threatening to "clean up" 50 people who went against it, according to NBA. Thursday's Jana Dharana weekly had carried a news report based on the Unity's statement.
The Unity Group that had been running various public organizations like hospitals and banks was declared illegal by the government and the Supreme Court.
According to the NBA statement, an "underground meeting" of the Unity managers decided to take physical action against law professionals who argued and delivered verdicts against it. "They have decided to assault the law practitioners after forming a national unity front," read the statement.
The NBA statement also quoted the Unity as saying, "If cleaning up 50 corrupt people helps all Nepali people, we would take that as a holy act."
Denouncing the threats, NBA has asked the Unity to stop such irresponsible acts. "This raises the question of human rights. We urge the Unity Group to respect the rule of law and stop issuing such threats," read the statement.
